When I look in the mirror this is what I see. -Joscelyn Saldana

Upon looking at this image you see a femal adolescent staring at herself in the mirror. What’s striking about this is that in the mirror we see something completely different from what the person actually looks like. You can see her bones sticking out, she looks very frail. However in the mirror you see someone who doesn’t have their bones showing. Instead the girl is more curvier. This image is striking because it shows how an individual perceives them self when looking in the mirror when in reality it’s nothing like they are. This is a physiological impact. This arises from societal expectations of body image.

This is especially important in today’s society because we see how society, specifically in pop culture creates this idea of the ideal body image. The perfect body being skinny, tall, and a thigh gap. These characteristics are unattainable. It is important to address the impact of these ideas on teens because it is a problem that exists till today. Girls and boys are pressured into looking a certain way, that when they don’t they begin to feel uncomfortable in their own skin. They look in a mirror and don’t like what they see. They think their fat but in reality could be skinny just like this image. It’s important to realize these bodily ideals people have created and stop idolizing them. Instead we should spread the message of learning to love yourself.

For the past 3 years I have become increasingly interested in this topic; the way females and males are affected by social media to compare the way they look to those they see on magazines or on tv. Very recently, a model by name of Ashley Graham became the first plus sized model to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Because of this change, more people are now saying “hey, her body looks like mine,” rather than, “why doesn’t my body look like hers?”

Your post really resonated with me, because I see how much of an issue this is in todays society. Body image is not only something that women struggle with, but also men. There are constantly advertisements and music portraying this unattainable image and it is easy to get pulled into it. There has been more movement towards acceptance of more than one body type, for example with the new barbies, but it is still an issue for many. Hopefully one day the narrow views of what a female or male should look like become broadened.
